CRANFORD, N.J. (PIX11) — Both Cranford's police chief and mayor are calling for unity in the wake of the Sept. 29 murders of 17-year-olds Isabella Salas and Maria Niotis.

"It is times like these that it's important that we come together to support one another with compassion and kindness," said Mayor Terrence Curran during the town council meeting on Monday.

"We ask for your patience and understanding as the criminal investigation and prosecution, they both unfold," said Cranford Police Chief Matthew Nazzaro, also during the town council meeting.

Chief Nazzaro is imploring residents not to speculate about the investigation. A 17-year-old who reportedly tried to date one of the victims is charged with fatally hitting them with his car while they were riding bikes.
