WINDHAM, Conn. (WFSB) — At 19-years-old, Hailey Desaulniers believes she’s ready to lead the town of Windham as mayor.

Born in 2006, the certified nursing assistant and lifelong Windham resident is running as the Republican candidate against incumbent Democratic Mayor Tom DeVivo in the November 4 election. Her candidacy has sparked mixed reactions from residents about whether someone so young can handle the responsibilities of municipal leadership.

“If not now, then when?” Desaulniers said when asked about her decision to run.

Desaulniers comes from a politically active family. Her father, Mike Desaulniers, who chairs the Windham Republican Town Committee, ran for mayor twice and is now supporting his daughter’s bid.
