DERBY, Conn. (WTNH) — A brand new unit is now open at Griffin Hospital in Derby, taking a step forward in addressing the need for mental health crisis services.
It's called "EmPATH," which stands for "Emergency Psychiatric Assessment, Treatment and Healing." The floor offers a calming space for patients in emotional crises.
"Patients oftentimes go into an inpatient unit -- if they can be moved to an EmPATH unit, in a healing environment, and care can be provided by a comprehensive team of caregivers, those hospitalizations could be avoided," Patrick Chamel, president and CEO of Griffin Hospital, said.
The EmPATH unit is staffed by psychiatrists, social workers and trained nurses with 4,300 square feet of sensory rooms, socialization tables, a shower room, snack station and more.
