ALBERTVILLE, Minn. — In the bitter cold of January last year, Chris Kirk did something few would dare — and it could have cost him his life. The Albertville, Minnesota resident leapt into the icy waters of the Crow River to save a truck driver trapped after he crashed into the water. The impact had torn apart the truck, leaving the driver trapped and partially submerged and gasping for air.

Kirk, who serves as an adult leader for Boy Scout Troop 547, didn’t hesitate to help. Before first responders could arrive, Kirk managed to free the man and pull him from the freezing water — a rescue the troops' Scoutmaster Josh Fehrmann said shows how good a role model Kirk is to the scouts.
