MADISON, Wis. (WMTV) - As negotiators from the U.S., Qatar and Egypt help broker a new ceasefire deal between Israel and Hamas, Wisconsin voices are weighing in on what could be a turning point in the nearly two-year war.

Under the first phase of the agreement, Hamas is expected to release hostages in exchange for Israel freeing Palestinian prisoners and pulling back troops from parts of Gaza. The deal would also pause fighting to allow humanitarian aid to flow into the region.

UW–Madison political science professor Andrew Kydd says it could mark a significant shift, but it’s not yet the end of the war.
