A woman is in custody and her infant is safe after a five-hour standoff with La Mesa police and San Diego sheriff's deputies on Thursday.

Police received a call around 1 p.m. from a neighbor on Seton Hall Street for a welfare check on the child. When officers arrived, the mother barricaded herself and the baby in her home.

Not knowing what was at stake, neighbors were shocked to see the law enforcement response: police, SWAT, the Drone Team, K9 officers and mental health counselors.

“The fact they had to make it this big of a thing. Call in like SWAT and police with rifles. I’m afraid there might be some sort of shootout,” neighbor Jim Fogelman said.

Fogelman is one of several neighbors who was told to shelter in place while negotiations to surrender unfolded.
