TRAVERSE CITY, MI - Residents and visitors can expected to see a more visible police presence in Traverse City’s downtown district now that the city Police Department is opening a new substation today.

The substation is located at 128 W. State St., near Union Street, and just a couple blocks off the busy Front Street corridor. It’s designed to be a home base for the city’s downtown community policing role, held by Officer Jonathan Culver.

That community policing role was created in 2019, as a funding partnership between the police and the city’s Downtown Development Authority. By 2023, the DDA had taken over fully funding the position. Since then, Police Chief Matthew Richmond said his team had been searching for a substation spot within that DDA zone.
