PORTAGE COUNTY, Wis. (WFRV) – The Wisconsin Department of Agriculture, Trade and Consumer Protection (DATCP) has confirmed that a deer farm in Portage County has tested positive for chronic wasting disease (CWD).
The positive result came from a 3-year-old buck and was verified by the National Veterinary Services Laboratories in Ames, Iowa.
According to DATCP, the premises is now under quarantine and will remain so while state and federal veterinarians conduct an epidemiological investigation alongside the U.S. Department of Agriculture.
CWD is a fatal neurological disease that affects the nervous systems of deer, elk, and moose. It is caused by an abnormal protein known as a prion and has no known cure.
