SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KELO) -- Although President Donald Trump on Thursday proclaimed Oct. 13 as Columbus Day, it is still officially Native Americans' Day in South Dakota.
Then Gov. George Mickelson led the effort to establish Native Americans' Day in the state. The law passed in 1990 and reads: "The second Monday in October, to be known as Native Americans' Day, shall be observed in this state as a legal holiday. Native Americans' Day is dedicated to the remembrance of the great Native American leaders who contributed so much to the history of our state."
Trump's Thursday proclamation ignores a Native American Day or Indigenous People Day, but some Republican leaders from South Dakota are acknowledging the state's day.
