Pittsburgh Public Schools enacted a hiring freeze this week as the school district grapples with the consequences of a state budget that is now over 100 days late.
The district in a news release Thursday said it is taking a “series of temporary fiscal safeguards” to preserve classroom operations and protect staff payroll. It comes as districts have missed billions of dollars of state payments as lawmakers continue to disagree on a 2026 budget.
“Balancing our passion for students with the fiscal responsibility required to keep our doors open is one of the hardest realities of leading a large public school system,” Superintendent Wayne Walters said in a statement.
