Just 24 hours prior to its formation, this system had a very low chance of development, but in true Karen fashion, she defied all odds and showed up anyway.
Karen is a subtropical storm, which the National Hurricane Center defines as “A non-frontal low pressure system that has characteristics of both tropical and extratropical cyclones”. The biggest difference between a subtropical and tropical storm is its fuel-source.
