Niagara Region councillors will consider next steps after the provincial government closed the door on options to continue curbside collection of recyclable materials from businesses, institutions and other organizations.

Concern stems from a Queen’s Park decision, starting in 2023, to shift responsibility for collecting residential recyclable materials from municipalities to producers, represented by Circular Materials.

It also meant the end of roadside collection of recyclable materials from “non-eligible sources” such as businesses, municipal facilities, institutions and places of worship, Catherine Habermebl, Niagara Region waste management services director, told councillors this week.
