Thorold residents could be electing their city councillors under a ward system five years from now.
Council has directed the city’s limited staff to explore how much it would cost for a consultant to explore the option and provide relevant financial information for the fall 2030 election.
Coun. Jim Handley, who put forth a successful motion Tuesday that calls for a for a fulsome report examining the possibilities of a ward system, said the growing city needs to look at population densities and take into consideration how they could relate to council representation.
“The day is going to come where there’s more of a population on the west side of the canal, in the Thorold South, Allanburg, Port Robinson area, than in … the downtown core,” he said.
