What was supposed to be a get-right game for the defending champions, the Philadelphia Eagles, after dropping their first game of the season to the Denver Broncos, turned into a one-sided beating by the end of it against the New York Giants.
After blowing a fourth-quarter lead last weekend, the Eagles are in complete meltdown mode, moving to 4-2 and on their heels. Meanwhile, the Giants have newfound hope for the present and future with the rookie combo of Jaxon Dart and Cam Skattebo.
Here are the headlines coming out of Thursday night's whirlwind.
What and who are the Eagles?
Through the first month of the season, Philadelphia's Houdini act was impressive. They were the defending champions and were allowed to appear weak in certain areas as long as they found a way to win in the end. They got outplayed by the Los Angeles Rams, but what did it matter when they blocked two field goals to win the game miraculously?
That type of narrative doesn't work, though, when you first blow a game to a young Broncos side and then follow it up by losing to a 1-4 divisional rival already looking towards next season. Jalen Hurts, who has pushed results over individual stats throughout his career, wasn't good enough on the night, with the rest of the team not finding those victories elsewhere to prop up the stagnant offense.
The Eagles already faced drama, particularly with their offense's performance, even when they were lifting trophies on unprecedented winning streaks.
Now, with two losses in a row and the offense coming up short, and an extended 10-day break before their next game, it's anyone's guess what players will post on social media.
The Giants have hope, and it's fun to watch
Unless your team is a perennial favorite to win the Super Bowl and go deep in the playoffs every season, there's no place a fanbase can be than when they discover a young quarterback that might turn their franchise around. A team that consistently makes the playoffs every year, like the Pittsburgh Steelers, but still ends up going home early with mediocre results, can't compare to a team that, regardless of their results, believes they've found the formula for creating their next Super Bowl-winning team.
The Giants are that team. Jaxon Dart, rookie mistakes and all, has ignited belief in a stadium that hasn't felt this way for either the Giants or Jets in years. Cam Skattebo is the human version of a hungry gremlin, flipping through the air and tearing through the trenches like his life depends on every inch he gains on the ground.
They're rough around the edges and fun as hell, pushing each other on the sideline like they're high schoolers on a sugar rush and then running without any fear on the field. At 2-4, it's still a long shot for the Giants to make a run for the playoffs this season, but that's OK.
Win or lose now, the Giants see the light at the end of the tunnel and a vision of what could be if Dart, Skattebo, and the rest of the team continue on their upward trajectory.
The Eagles can lambast their situation on social media all they want.
Skattebo is too busy doing backflips in the end zone and shaking his head like a Tasmanian devil.
