MONTPELIER, Vt. (WCAX) - Vermont Governor Phil Scott on Friday announced a plan to cut back on crime in Chittenden County amid mounting frustration and calls for action from residents and businesses in Vermont’s largest city.
The governor announced the creation of a special accountability court to address a backlog in cases. His office says it’s in response to increased concerns about crime in Burlington and follows a meeting with the city’s mayor earlier this week.
The governor will appoint a special prosecutor to work in Chittenden County on the case backlog and take on repeat offender cases. The Judiciary will also appoint a dedicated judge to it.
Numbers obtained by WCAX show that Chittenden County was clearing cases at a rate of about 115 percent last month. They’re resolving more
