MANHATTAN, N.Y. (PIX11) -- In just a year, teams from the Partnership Assistance Transit Homelessness Program have made over 20,000 connections with the homeless and mentally ill in the subway system.
Mayor Adams and city officials touted the achievement, saying the program changed the landscape underground, resulting in a safer, cleaner commute for riders.
"When we came into office, our mission was clear: Not ignoring people with needs and not ignoring violent behavior on our streets, and we are seeing the results of our success," said Adams.
Adams says that since teams of NYPD officers and mental healthcare professionals set out to help the homeless and mentally ill, they removed over 6,000 people, and that's not all.
