LONG ISLAND, N.Y. (PIX11) -- A powerful nor’easter is set to bring strong winds and heavy rain to the Long Island coast this Sunday.

Jones Beach officials are ramping up preparations, placing barriers, readying emergency equipment, and deploying 500 sandbags around key buildings to defend against the expected storm surge.

Jeffrey Mason, the park director, says, "We have our berm up on the beach front to try to protect the center area of the park."

On Friday, Mason outlined additional preparations, including generator checks, fueling vehicles, and ensuring chainsaws are ready.

“We've got our generators prepped and ready to go. We've filled up our vehicles, our chainsaws are, you know, working well,” Mason explained.
