PORTLAND Ore. (KPTV) - The Multnomah County District Attorney’s Office is working to contact more than a thousand people in the Portland area who may have been sex trafficked on the Backpage or CityXGuide websites, the DA’s office announced on Friday.
The site launched in 2004 to host classified ads, but the ‘adult services’ section became the site’s primary source of income - about $500 million, according to the DA’s office.
In 2018, the federal government shut the site down, and three owners of the site were sentenced to prison.
The government also seized site assets, including bitcoin that was used as payment for sex trafficking related transactions. The seized funds are now being distributed to trafficking victims through the federal program “Backpage Remission.”
