A boil order was issued for the entire suburb of Lake Forest on Friday afternoon after a "significant" water main break, city officials said.

The city, in a news release, said a "significant" water main break caused water pressure to drop below by Illinois Environmental Protection Agency standards. As a result, a boil order went into effect citywide.

Residents and businesses should bring water to a rolling boil for at least three minutes and allow it to cool, if using it for the following purposes:

Drinking

Cooking

Brushing teeth

Washing food

City officials said the water supply remains safe to use for most household purposes. The boil order will remain in place until testing confirms the water is safe. According to the city, that could take between 24 and 48 hours.
