HAMDEN, Conn. (WTNH) — Families and students gathered at West Woods School on Friday to take part in the annual Bike & Roll to School Day in Hamden.

A mile of Still Hill Road was closed Friday morning and afternoon to allow "smooth passage" to and from school. Students were joined by their families for the commute that began at the Johnson Road fire station.

The event is usually held twice a year, during October and May.

The Bike & Roll is designed to build a sense of community and school spirit.

"We had a great turnout," West Woods School principal Dan Levy said. "We've been doing it a few years, so we've really gotten the message out. I think the kids really enjoy it, the families enjoy it, a special way to spend time with the kids as they take a slower way of getting to school."
