The resurfacing project along Cherokee Boulevard and Dayton Boulevard is aimed at making the area safer.
Tennessee's Department of Transportation calls the concept a 'road diet' as it drops down lanes and speed to encourage safety.
"Road diets can have many benefits related to safety. Those include fewer crashes, both rear-end crashes and sideswipe crashes... People are supposed to drive a lower speeds, so if there are crashes, they are less severe," said Rae Ann Bradley, a regional director with Tennessee's Department of Transportation.
However, since work started on the project, there's been confusion and crashes.
