Three people have died after a light plane crashed and caught on fire at Shellharbour Airport on Saturday morning.

Emergency services are currently on scene at the fatal aircraft crash.

About 10am on Saturday October 11, emergency services responded to reports of the crash at Shellharbour Airport.

Police said the light aircraft crashed at the scene shortly after take-off.

Upon impacting with the ground, the aircraft caught on fire which was extinguished by Fire and Rescue NSW .

Three people have been confirmed dead, and there are no reports of any other people being injured.

It appears the crash took place at the southern end of the runway, with wreckage strewn along the runway.

FRNSW inverstigators and police remained on scene at midday.
