As a Virginia family’s four-decade wait for justice ended with a man who killed a mother of two in 1986 receiving multiple life sentences, another victim’s family was in court to witness it.

Prosecutors described real estate agent Jacqueline Lard’s murder on Nov. 14, 1986, as every woman’s deepest fear: A wife and mother left work at a Stafford County office when she was attacked, beaten and strangled.

Lard’s body was found under carpet remnants in a wooded area of Woodbridge. Her car was found in Fairfax.

“Every woman, every mother, every sister understands when you walk out at night, there’s just a sense of fear,” Stafford County Deputy Commonwealth’s Attorney Amy Casey said.
