SHELBYVILLE, Tenn. (WKRN) — Some cleanup work is taking place at a historic jail in Bedford County. City leaders want to make the jail available for public tours.
The jail was built in the 1860s, just after the Civil War, and was the county's primary jail until the late 1980s when a newer jail was built. The Bedford County Rock jail is located just off the square in Shelbyville.
The architecture is made of thick stone, and the city plans to use it as a historic site. Bedford County Archives and Record Center Director Carol Roberts said the city wants to integrate the jail into its historic downtown.
