ESCANABA ― When Gaylord walked off the field at the end of the 2024 season, sporting a 3-6 record and feeling a sense of not living up for expectations, they knew they needed a change.

Perhaps the players were unaware of exactly what that change would look like as then-coach DJ Szymoniak would part ways with the program, just two years after the team's undefeated season and Big North Championship run in 2023. They probably didn't expect to see one of their assistant coaches, Matt Silsbury, take over the program in late May or the changes he and the new coaching staff would bring.
