Brenden Crammer sat in the Glassport Municipal Building one day last month, weighing the next steps he needs to take as he plans for what his career could look like.

That day, Mr. Crammer, 18, attended South Allegheny School District’s new community office hours, aimed at expanding workforce development support to current students, recent graduates and community members.

He worked with Laura Thomson, the district’s workforce development coordinator, to figure out a temporary career path to tide him over as he prepares to interview with Operating Engineers Local 66.

“More personal,” Ms. Thomson said, as she described the strategy of holding office hours outside of school buildings. “More future-focused. Not moving backwards to a high school but moving forward.”
