MURRIETA — Murrieta Valley football coach George Wilson said a punt fake has been in the playbook for more than decade.
The Nighthawks practice the play almost every day, but Wilson said the opportunity to utilize it in a game never really felt right.
Until Friday night.
Jacob Taddi picked up 9 yards for the first down, and then Jeremiah Watson delivered the knockout blow with his sixth touchdown of the evening as Murrieta Valley outlasted Chaparral 56-42 in a heated Big West Conference-North Division showdown.
“I did,” Wilson said when asked who called the fake punt. “I always believed if the situation felt right, we could execute that play.
“My coaches wanted me to kick it, but the guys wanted to go. I think the players having confidence swayed me to make that call.”
