BIRMINGHAM, Ala. —
The Southern Poverty Law Center's ( SPLC ) Critical Memory Tour at the Birmingham Civil Rights Institute focused on uncovering historical truths often taken out of context and emphasizing unity to prevent repeating past mistakes.
Lisa McNair, whose sister Denise was one of the four girls killed in the 16th Street Baptist Church bombing 62 years ago, shared her family's story.
"We've got to figure out how to get along, we've got to figure out how to have differences and not hate each other," McNair said.
She emphasized the importance of her sister's story, saying, "She was a wonderful child. She was 11 when she was killed, and the only child that my parents had; they'd been trying for the whole time she was alive to have more babies and never could carry to term.
