Former US President Joe Biden is currently undergoing radiation and hormone therapy for prostate cancer, which was diagnosed in May. A spokesperson confirmed this treatment plan on Saturday, stating, "As part of a treatment plan for prostate cancer, President Biden is currently undergoing radiation therapy and hormone treatment."
The 82-year-old Biden's cancer is aggressive and has spread to his bones. His office revealed that he experienced urinary symptoms leading to the discovery of a prostate nodule. In a previous statement, Biden expressed his resilience, saying, "Cancer touches us all. Like so many of you, Jill and I have learned that we are strongest in the broken places. Thank you for lifting us up with love and support."
Biden's health has been a topic of concern, especially as he campaigns for a second presidential term against Donald Trump. Following a poor debate performance in July 2024, he withdrew from the race and endorsed Vice President Kamala Harris, who later lost to Trump.
Prostate cancer is the most common cancer among men, particularly affecting older individuals. Studies show that about 80% of men over 80 have cancerous cells in their prostate. Although it is highly treatable when detected early, it remains the second leading cause of cancer-related deaths in men. Biden's medical team noted that his Gleason score, which assesses the aggressiveness of prostate cancer, was 9, indicating a serious condition.
In addition to his prostate cancer treatment, Biden had Mohs surgery last month to remove cancerous skin cells from his forehead. His physician confirmed that all cancerous tissue was successfully removed. Despite these health challenges, Biden's office has stated that he remains in good spirits and is following his doctors' advice closely.
As Biden continues his treatment, he is exploring various options to manage his condition effectively. The American Cancer Society recommends regular screenings for men in their 50s and 60s, but it is unclear if Biden was screened during his last medical examination while in office. His age and health have been scrutinized, but he and his family have consistently denied concerns regarding his fitness for office.
