The Great Falls CMR offense went back out onto the field, looking like it would try to convert on fourth-and-2 from about its own 40-yard line.
Quarterback Caleb Taylor tried to draw Bozeman High’s defense offsides, but the Hawks didn’t move. Just under three minutes remained in the fourth quarter Friday, and the Rustlers led by six. CMR made the decision to call its second timeout to avoid a delay of game penalty, a puzzling decision if the plan was to punt the ball away anyway. At first, that’s what it looked like, but the Rustlers ran their offense back out, surprising the Hawks.
Bozeman head coach Levi Wesche then called his team’s last timeout to ensure his own team was aligned correctly for a fourth-down stand.
