For Bette Midler , Diane Keaton will always be a friend first.

In the wake of Keaton's death at age 79 , the First Wives Club actress shared an heartfelt tribute to her late costar

"The brilliant, beautiful, extraordinary Diane Keaton has died," Midler wrote on Instagram Oct. 11 . "I cannot tell you how unbearably sad this makes me. She was hilarious, a complete original, and completely without guile, or any of the competitiveness one would have expected from such a star."

The 79-year-old added, "What you saw was who she was…oh, la, lala!"
