More than half of Albuquerque speed camera enforcement citations have gone unpaid. And now, four of Mayor Tim Keller's challengers in the upcoming election say they will scrap or overhaul the program.

The city has issued nearly 450,000 citations, potentially generating $45 million if fully collected, but only 48% have been paid.

"We also send these tickets to collections," said Dan Mayfield, a city spokesperson. "And the collections agency has been very effective."

Mayfield said the city can also boot vehicles found on city streets that have not paid; however, no cars have been booted.

Albuquerque's speed camera program was reinstated by Keller. Nearly a decade earlier, the city scrubbed a similar program after voters passed a referendum to get rid of it.
