KELLEYS ISLAND, Ohio (WJW) - Watch your step!

Wildlife officials in northeast Ohio shared video captured last week of a Lake Erie water snake swiftly slithering through grass, fallen leaves, and sticks, making its way towards water.

The video was captured at Kelleys Island State Park.

In a post on Facebook, officials said the water snake was "once endangered—but thanks to conservation efforts, it made a remarkable comeback!"

"Native to the Lake Erie Islands, this non-venomous snake plays a vital role in the ecosystem by helping control invasive fish like the round goby," officials wrote. "If you see one basking on a rock or swimming near shore, give it space and a smile—it’s a sign of a healthy Lake Erie!"
