A massive shark once in Massachusetts has now moved to a rare spot, something scientists are now watching.
The shark named Contender was tagged by Ocearch on Jan. 17 in Florida. At 13.8 feet long and weighing an estimated 1,653 pounds, he is the largest male shark tagged by Ocearch in the Atlantic.
The shark swam from Massachusetts to Canada in a "rare ping from the Gulf of St. Lawrence, a region where we don’t often see signals from OCEARCH-tagged sharks," the organization wrote on Instagram .
Senior Data Scientist John Tyminski said a shark moving to the Gulf of St. Lawrence isn’t completely unusual. However, the part where Contender went to is rare.
