Several students at College of the Desert's downtown Indio campus say it lacks adequate security, putting students and staff in danger. Their concerns were highlighted recently when a woman threatened and lunged at two students in a restroom with a screwdriver — and the college waited a week before sending out a public alert .

Though the incident happened shortly after noon on Sept. 10, COD alerted the campus community of the incident on Sept. 17, despite federal law that requires a "timely warning" for crimes posing a "serious or ongoing threat," according to the Clery Center .
