Authorities Sunday were investigating the death of a 50-year-old Perris man who was killed in a shooting that involved an off-duty Orange County sheriff’s deputy in a remote area dividing Orange and Riverside counties.
Deputies from the Lake Mathews sheriff’s station responded to multiple calls reporting a shooting at 8:15 p.m. Friday in the area of Holy Jim Trail and Main Divide Road near Santiago Peak, according to the Riverside County Sheriff’s Department.
The deputy, whose name was withheld, had been approached by a man who appeared to be under the influence and who was armed with a firearm, the RCSD stated.
The deputy allegedly identified himself as a law enforcement officer and gave the man multiple verbal commands to raise his hands. The department said the man refused to comply
