SHALLOTTE, N.C. — Quinton Holden always wanted to be a shrimp boat captain.

A fourth-generational shrimper, the 24-year-old grew up wearing fishing bibs and packing shrimp on the docks near Shallotte, just north of the South Carolina stateline. After saving up thousands of dollars, Quinton finally purchased his first boat last month, a 48-foot, single-engine trawler called the Lori Ann.

But on Oct. 6, Holden and his two crew members nearly lost their lives in a massive fire near North Myrtle Beach.

"This one’s going to stick," Holden said. "All I could think about was getting home to my son and my wife. And getting out of that dinghy."
