Consumers are expected to spend a record $13.1 billion on Halloween this year, as the effects of inflation and President Donald Trump’s tariffs hit people’s wallets.
Go to any Halloween store and you’ll find that most consumers feel as if prices are getting out of hand.
“The prices were close to double on a lot of stuff” compared with a few years ago, said Don Wood, a Nutley dad who walked empty-handed from the Spirit Halloween store on Route 46 in Woodland Park. “The decor especially was very, very overpriced.”
The $13.1 billion in projected spending was an estimate by the National Retail Federation, a trade group, which conducted its annual Halloween spending survey in conjunction with Prosper Insights & Analytics.
