PULASKI, New York (WWNY) - For nearly 80 years, he was known as unknown soldier x-806. Now, that soldier is identified and back home in the north country.

Emotions ran high as relatives learned Corporal Donald Burmingham, a soldier missing in action after being killed in the Korean War, had been identified. Cousin Shawn Doyle never knew Burmingham, but knows a great deal about him, and knows this is a big deal.

“It’s been 75 years. He left Camden and took the train to join the service in 1946. That’s 79 years since he left this county,” he said.

Doyle says that while fighting in Korea, Burmingham became surrounded by the enemy as he tried to save a wounded soldier. The defense department put the 22-year-old in Waegwan, South Korea, in 1950.
