JOHNSON COUNTY, Tenn. (WJHL) — Prosecutors will seek a sentence of life in prison without parole in the trial of a man accused of shooting and injuring a Johnson County deputy.

Joey Ponce was arrested after allegedly shooting and injuring a deputy during a pursuit in April.

Ponce was also struck by gunfire when deputies reportedly returned fire.

In May, the Tennessee Bureau of Investigation reported Ponce had been charged with two counts of attempted first-degree murder, evading arrest, possession of a firearm during the commission of a dangerous felony and possession of stolen property.

On Monday, the district attorney's office informed News Channel 11 that a notice of intent had been filed, which is required by law if prosecutors plan to seek the death penalty or life without parole.
