MORGANTOWN, W.Va. (WBOY) — On Indigenous Peoples' Day, WVU brought its campus community together to celebrate more than 30 years of the planting of its Peace Tree downtown.
WVU's Native American Studies Program hosted the 33rd anniversary of the peace tree ceremony on Monday alongside multiple guest speakers with the goal of bringing students, staff and the community together to celebrate peace and Native American culture.
On Sept. 12, 1992, WVU's Peace Tree was planted, representing the University's commitment to the rediscovery of Native American heritage. However, on Aug. 8th, 1996, vandals cut down the original Peace Tree, but a new one was planted.
