A petition urging the city to lower speed limits on Stratford’s local and collector roads to 40 kilometres per hour has at least been successful in sparking a discussion to do just that, even if it does not go through.

At Tuesday’s council meeting, a staff report that recommended lowering the speed limits on these streets — originally introduced in October 2023 — will be brought forward again. However, a planned motion from Coun. Larry McCabe may end the process without any speed limit changes.

This process comes a couple of months after a local environmental group, Climate Momentum, launched its Safer Speeds on Stratford Streets petition. That petition, which now has 183 signatures, asked Stratford to include the change in the city’s 2026 roads and traffic budget.
