RODANTHE, N.C. (WNCN) — Crews have returned to once again to build up Outer Banks dunes along a stretch of N.C. 12 where "ocean overwash" on Tuesday rendered the key road impassable for traffic.
According to the NCDOT, the gap between Rodanthe and the Marc Basnight Bridge was closed to drivers just before 2:30 p.m. Tuesday. This comes after high tides and mass flooding from a Nor'easter that targeted the North Carolina coast over the weekend.
NCDOT officials asked locals and travelers in the area to "be patient as NCDOT crews are working to repair the dune," so the road can be reopened safely and as soon as possible.
Several sections of N.C. 12 were closed due to flooding over the weekend, including some areas to the south in Carteret County at Cedar Island.
