AIKEN, S.C. (WRDW/WAGT) - A major infrastructure project designed to ease traffic congestion on Whiskey Road is making progress, with city officials saying the connector could provide relief as soon as next year.

The Powderhouse Road Connector Project will divert traffic from East Pine Log Road, particularly during rush hour and when nearby schools dismiss students.

The area’s traffic problems were highlighted Monday evening when a crash on Whiskey Road near Hitchcock Drive took four hours to clear , creating even longer commutes for drivers.

“Just a big bang pop kind of sounded like a motorcycle backfire and didn’t think much about it until I saw the ambulance go by and then obviously noticed it was quite a big wreck out there in the middle of the intersection,” said Layton Woody
