IOWA CITY, Iowa (KCRG) - A funny thing happened over in Happy Valley.

In less than a month, Penn State went from national title contender to a season off the rails.

The Nittany Lions fired head coach James Franklin, interim head coach Terry Smith is in charge.

“Their team is going to be ready. I don’t think their defense is gonna change, they have the same defensive coordinator (Jim Knowles), said senior quarterback Mark Gronowski. “They run a lot of different schemes and they like to throw a lot of different things at you.”

“I know that those other coaches are going to get those guys ready to go.”

After starting quarterback Drew Allar went down with a season-ending injury, PSU will have a new starting QB this Saturday - Ethan Grunkemeyer.

It will be Grunkemeyer’s first college start
