President Trump's new tariffs on imported lumber went into effect Tuesday aimed at boosting the United State's timber production.
They include a 10% tariff on all timber and lumber imports and a 25% tariff on cabinets and furniture.
Some people are praising the move they say will encourage more domestic manufacturing, but critics argue it will raise the cost to build a home.
The U.S. does get most of its lumber from Canada. Trump has long criticized that, saying America has enough trees to support its own lumber needs, but experts say, it's not that simple.
"At the end of the day, new home buyers are the ones who are going to pay the tariffs," says Nick Erickson, Senior Director of Housing Policy for Housing First Minnesota.
