In John Snobelen’s excellent op-ed “Carney should be channelling toughness of Canuck old-timer” (Oct. 11), in response to Prime Minister Mark Carney’s meeting with U.S. President Donald Trump he writes: “If Carney is to avoid being a smart guy in a suit with good ideas that never become reality, he is going to need a stiffer backbone and a little urgency. In other words, he needs to be tougher.” Snobelen’s description of Carney’s playbook reminds me of a great quote from Harold Ballard, former owner of the Maple Leafs. So, speaking of Carney needing a stiffer backbone, although Leaf forward Inge Hammarstrom wasn’t a Canadian, Ballard is quoted as saying: “Hammarstrom could go into the corner with a dozen eggs in his pocket and not break any of them.”
