TUCSON, Ariz. (KVOA) - The Tucson Unified School District (TUSD) is seeking voter approval for an override of its maintenance and operations budget in the Nov. 4 election. If passed, Prop 414 would generate more than $45 million in the first year for items like increased teacher pay.

TUSD officials claim that Arizona public schools will lose close to $1 billion to private schools this year. TUSD Superintendent Gabriel Trujillo told reporters Tuesday the Arizona State Legislature is not providing necessary funding.

"They're taking very deliberate actions to siphon away money from traditional public school districts," Trujillo said. "Mainly through the universal expansion of vouchers and empowerment scholarship accounts."
