The kids have all been in school for a month now, but at the beginning of September, I was thinking about and remembering those magical few days or weeks at the beginnings of many school years in our family.

Our kids either walked the 10 blocks or so to elementary school, about a mile to junior high and just down the hill to high school, or they took the bus. I may be alone in these thoughts, but if I am, I must have been a horrible mother, and I don’t think I was that bad, but I always felt a wonderful, peaceful “all’s right with the world” feeling come over me as my kids set out for school those first days, walking or busing.

We had been a constant presence to each other, done lots of fun stuff, made things, and had new experiences all summer, but now it was fall. Big sigh. Autumn. Tim
