The owner of a vehicle in Guelph took the law into his own hands, detaining a man he witnessed breaking in, police said.

The incident occurred on Tuesday, at approximately 1:20 p.m., police said, when the owner of a vehicle, parked at a plaza near Edinburgh Road South and Stone Road West, saw a man get into his vehicle and take cash.

The owner and other witnesses detained the man until police arrived and arrested him.

Police said the accused had a bag containing approximately $270 in clothing, stolen a short time earlier from a store at Stone Road Mall.

He provided a false name, police said, but his true identity was determined a short time later and he was found to be bound by a probation order.
